Early learning is brought to life in this version of an outdoor classroom. Children are invited to explore water, plants and annuals in the rear garden and are later called back to the courtyard for reflection in the council ring. Beyond the wall, the rear garden provides areas for water exploration, thematic garden beds, and a nature pond. Within the courtyard, the council ring provides a peaceful setting to which children return and reflect upon their learning experiences. Sculpture is located throughout to inspire creative thought. Weaving together the various elements of the garden are tiles created by children. Come experience learning through a child's eyes!

Our installation registers movement in seemingly static objects. Landscape implies something beyond itself...beyond a given frame of reference. It is living poetry that challenges our limited perceptions.

A peek through the tulip gate reveals a simple path, nearly hidden by foliage, winding past an abandoned pick-up that sits at the edge of the garden. Here order gives way to nature’s design. The truck, long ago retired, has been accessorized by nature with grasses, perennials and bulbs. Loads previously hauled are now merely memories. The vernacular gardener had little time for fussiness, and the gardens form a testament to utility, and to a creativity born of necessity.

Sustainable delights abound in the sloping San Francisco artist’s garden. Clay soil natives, potted edibles, and aromatics mingle with the found-material sculptural elements along meandering paths of permeable concrete stepping-stones. Storm water flows down the hillside's stream-bed swale into a cistern, diminishing runoff, and storing water for thirsty plants in the dry season. Whether for sculpting or potting, the studio/shed, built from recycled materials, has a green-roof that captures runoff while adding biodiversity, natural insulation, and beauty.

Our garden is designed in a general mediterranean style and highlights the use of antique materials in garden design. In addition, our use of plant materials and overall design creates the feeling of a garden that has existed for many years. The use of an old building facade as a backdrop creates a perfect foil for this style of garden. Water creates a soothing sound and cooling effect below the tall sheltering palm trees. This garden was designed for outdoor relaxation and entertainment. The semi-enclosed space creates a nicely scaled space for the user.

Oh to be sixteen again! A simpler time when all things were possible. Welcome to Sixteen! Help us celebrate our 16th garden in this show. Simplicity of design is the key element of a successful garden. The comfortable setting reminds us of the serenity of Nature. The floating patio and pathways consist of 16 tons of stone - yet they harmonize with the natural surroundings and do not overwhelm them. Water adds to the mystery of the garden and brings balance to our environment. Man, also created by Nature, has contributed to this idyllic setting with stonewalls, paths, and beautiful wooden arbors. Oh, to be sixteen again. Enjoy!

Bay Area Back Alley replicates a San Francisco phenomenon; grassy alleys between backyards leading to the occasional garage; traveled mostly by dog-walkers; used as shortcuts by neighbors and locals. Our intent is to evoke the mood of an actual stretch of dirt road called Ohlone Way in the neighborhood of Glen Park Canyon. As a plain brown paper might be the wrapping for a heartfelt gift, so our little unpaved lane opens into surprise and delight. Emerging from black berry brambles and flaming fennel, one rounds a bend to be greeted by a startlingly cheery and eclectic jumble of flowers, furniture, and knick-knacks.

Imagination mixed magically with horticulture makes this infinity garden. We use ancient symbols (circles) and not-so-ancient materials recycled to create an outdoor space that is modern in design and rustic in charm.

We live in a world where the buildings around us are becoming larger and taller, and our open green areas are disappearing. Development takes over, leaving the apartment dweller with diminished contact with the natural world. This deprivation inspires us to create an indoor Modernist Garden using the concept of terrariums.

Magic Gardens will illustrate varying environments (sun/shade variations) and the Spring blooming plant material appropriate for those needs. The garden will tastefully move from a deep woodland planting to a hot sun garden. A stream will cross through these environments, with the stone depicting the feeling of the garden. Specimen trees will be placed throughout the garden to create a complete canopy overhead, truly engulfing the attendees as they view the garden and interact with the beautiful color and foliage of the garden.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, architects of grand old European estates captured the romance of architectural ruins by building 'garden folies'. Tucked away in the corners of the properties, these secret garden hideaways were designed to give the impression of great age, and were wonderful places to go read a book, play 'hide and seek', or perhaps dine. This garden is adorned with rare 19th and early 20th century antique garden ornaments, furniture and details. Mature specimen conifers and ornamentals create a sense of permanence. Naturalized plantings, moss, leaf litter and decay prove the passing of time.

This contemporary Mission-style home looks out on an elegant tiled courtyard and meditation labyrinth. Walk the labyrinth; listen to the soothing sound of water as it trickles through the living roof, down a living wall, and into the garden; or step through the gate into a wooded retreat. But there’s more to this beauty than meets the eye. The roof and wall capture rainwater as well as provide insulation. Beds of edible herbs and flowers form the labyrinth. Orchard trees, berries and buds create the wooded retreat, providing sustenance for the owners and habitat for wildlife. Enjoy!

Amidst the beauty of our lush world, we often find a place of ideal serenity and loveliness. It is here that we can reconnect with the world and its natural beauty. Our inspiration for creating paradise is in a place tucked away in South America. The Iguazu Falls of Argentina and Brazil is a national park of 275 waterfalls hidden deep in the sub-tropical rainforest. This garden is an example of our work as artists creating safe havens in which to release the mundane stresses of American life. An escape to paradise is all we promise.

Using very few elements, we present a bold, romantic vision of sumptuous living in harsh surroundings. Amidst drifting sands, studded with occasional grasses, a nomadic encampment has been erected. Using date palms as tent poles, and the weatherworn stone remains of an ancient culture as stakes, heirloom kilim rugs have been laid in the sand, and colorful fabric strung overhead to create shelter and shade. Pillows, blankets, jars and baskets, camel saddles and cooking implements evidence the inhabitants. Outside, in the sun, dates and nuts dry in shallow baskets near the spring that marks this place as life sustaining.

Have you ever walked down a street and wondered what everyone else's backyard looks like? Here’s a chance to take a peek. There's a tropical garden with big, bold, leaves and another one with an Asian flair. The formal garden of course has lawn and hedges while the Mediterranean garden is packed with loose, wispy herbs and perennials. And then there’s that Southwest garden that doesn't need much water but still has lots of color and interesting textures. So next time you need a cup of sugar, lean over the fence and ask your neighbor.
