STATEMENT:
California’s wildfires have brought devastation to the state this last year. California’s landscapes are known for their amazing beauty, but our wood fences, decks, and patio structures with their beauty are also fire hazards. We must look beyond the commonly used materials and think outside of the box to create a new California landscape that is resistant to fire. In our garden, we have replaced common wood structures with steel. Wood which has been used has been charred with an ancient Japanese technique called Shou sugi ban. This technique makes the wood fire resistant. A reflecting pond provides additional water storage for fire suppression and plants have been selected for their fire-resistant qualities.
